What you'll practise

Your BATNA, your best alternative to a negotiated agreement, is what you will actually do if this deal falls through. Roger Fisher and William Ury named it in Getting to Yes (1981; 2nd edition with Bruce Patton, 1991). The Brew-Off drills the three moments where it matters. First, prep: pick a real alternative, value it (value × chance − cost, the method Harvard's Program on Negotiation teaches) and turn it into a walk-away point. Then read the buyer: their alternative, including doing nothing, and whether a zone of agreement exists at all. Finally the call: accept, trade or walk, and when to keep your BATNA to yourself. Every answer links to the section of the BATNA guide it comes from, with its source. Scores and ranks stay on this device. No sign-up.
